When Southern Baptists gather in New Orleans next month, it’s very likely we’ll do something we’ve never done before: elect an African-American president.
Lawrence Smith, a reporter with WDRB here in Louisville, put together this special report about this significant moment in the life of the Southern Baptist Convention.

It’s very exciting and encouraging that Bro. Fred Luter is most likely going to be the next president of the Southern Baptist Convention! He’s visited Campbellsville University, we have been good friends of his, and we look forward to his leadership of the SBC. This is a positive step for our convention as we work to reach the world for Christ.
I couldn’t agree more! Thanks for your work, John, over the past several years, to promote reconciliation in Kentucky.
As a Southern Baptist, I’m proud of this approaching moment! I’m afraid our part on race relations has been a blight on our denominations, going back from part of the split with ‘Northern” Baptists being the fact we had ministers with black slaves. When I was growing up, the most understanding Baptists thought it was okay if blacks sat in the balcony, often so long as they didn’t use the same doors as whites to enter!
(It is fine with me to post my remark)
